The story below shows how one man with a burning ambition decided to carry his idea through to fruition. We don't know if he was seeking fame or money, or if they were just by-products of what he achieved. What we do know about is his vision and that he pursued his dream until it became reality.

\nMeccano is a name known to just about everyone, both in the UK and worldwide, although these days, it goes under the brand name Erector in the United States. Over a hundred years ago, Frank Hornby took out a patent on his Meccano system, making it one of the oldest toy brands on sale today. So what is it about Meccano that's enabled it to survive two World Wars and everything else that's happened over the years?
\n
\nFrank was born in Liverpool in 1863, he married a schoolteacher, Clara, when he was 23 and they had two sons and a daughter. He worked as a bookkeeper for his father until 1899, when Hornby senior died, and the business had to close. After that, he continued in the same line of work for a meat importer, so clearly, his background was not in engineering.
\n
\nHe had a workshop at home, the Victorian equivalent of a shed. He used to make toys for his kids, out of parts he made from sheet metal. These were the kinds of models that later became the basis for designs in the Meccano manuals - lorries, bridges and cranes, for example.
\n
\nFrank had never heard of personal development. He was an enthusiastic amateur, a would-be small business owner. He sounds like an early version of Steve Wozniak or Steve Jobs of Apple, or the Internet entrepreneurs of today. Although we see him as a loving father, making toys for his children, they were probably just lucky to have a dad who needed kids to carry out his market research, to fulfil his dream.

\nHis stroke of genius was to come up with the idea of making reusable strips, with standard holes on a fixed pitch of half-an-inch. Other parts - wheels, pulleys, axles, and nuts and bolts, made the system versatile and gave it the ability to be assembled into a mechanical model. This could then be played with, taken apart and built into a different model.

\nFrank had actually invented a system of general purpose, re-programmable hardware that could almost be seen as a mechanical precursor of the microprocessor many years later. This is quite a good analogy, as it turns out. Kids brought up in the golden age of Meccano were also the generation that built the early home-made computers from the ground up. The sense of achievement with the end product was very much the same for both. This is the magic of Meccano.

\nWith the home built computer, it made no difference that you were sat in front of a black-and-white television for a display. You knew that the Lunar Lander program showed exactly what you'd see if you were Neil Armstrong landing on the moon.

\nThe difficulty level of a Meccano project was irrelevant to the thrill of building a mechanical model. The Meccano Magazine, published every month, had an easy model for beginners that could be assembled from a few parts. Some of the difficult models in the manuals took a lot more building, but were equally satisfying when they were finished.

\nThe skills learned from Meccano were invaluable to kids in later years, as they started work, often as engineering apprentices. The techniques they learned from Meccano are lacking in many modern products, techniques such as the use of lock nuts and washers. Many successful men and women credit Meccano with having had a profound effect on their careers, over the years.

Insurance is a good thing. Whether it's a full coverage policy or a cable locking your motorcycle to a pole in bad neighborhood, if buying or installing something reduces your anxiety then it is a good. To help ease your anxieties build a set of frame sliders to protect your motorcycle in the event of a low side to a parking lot tip over thanks to an errant driver. This project will cost less then $30 and you will need to purchase the following: 4 skateboard wheels or roller skate wheels with bearings, threaded rod, four nuts, a hacksaw, pliers, hammer, random washers and loctite.

\nStart by going to a local thrift store in search of an old skateboard or roller skates. The condition of the wheels doesn't matter as their sole purpose is to be sacrificed to save your bike from getting damaged. Once you have the wheels, go to a hardware store and purchase at least 4 feet of 5/8th-inch threaded rod. Purchase four nuts that screw onto the threaded rod and some loctite. If you don't have pliers, a hammer or a hacksaw, purchase them now. First, stick the threaded rod through your motorcycle's hollow axle. Slip a wheel over each end of the axle and include a little extra space for the width of the nuts. It is better to have a little extra room then not enough. Once you have the length required, mark the cut off point with your finger and remove the threaded rod. Spin a nut onto the threaded rod to the point where your finger is marking and proceed to cut the threaded rod with a hacksaw. When you are finished cutting, spin the nut off the freshly cut edge to chase the threads.

\nRepeat this process for the other wheel. Assemble one side with a wheel and a nut and feed the threaded rod through the axle. Install the other wheel and nut and check for fit. Use miscellaneous washers to shim up the rod to allow the wheels to spin freely, which will help them survive the crash better. Once everything is installed, drip some loctite on the end of the nuts and tighten the nuts snug. Cut the threaded rods flush with the nut then make two cuts forming an X perpendicular to the rod's threads. Hit the X with a hammer to deform the rod's threads and ensure the skateboard wheels don't vibrate loose. Repeat this process for the other wheel. This is just another way to improve your motorcycle experience through making your own parts. The next time you come outside in the morning to find someone knocked over your motorcycle, nothing important will be damaged, which is one less thing to be anxious about.
